Are Baptists Christian?

baptistsign

Believe it or not this is a very often “googled” question and in my ministry I have been asked this exact question and/or other very close versions of the same question. It is understandable from an “outsiders” point of view, considering how many different denominations there are underneath the umbrella of “Christianity”.  Many non believers -and even some believers- seem to be confused about what it takes to be “Christian”,  what the different denominations are, or (simply) “What it means to be saved and be a Christian”

-in the first place.

It is with this in mind that questions like “Are Baptists Christian?” originate. . .

So, to start at the top we will shoot for what it means to be a “Christian”.  To determine if “Baptists are Christian” it would be beneficial to understand exactly what it means to be a Christian, first!

*** A Christian is one who realizes we are sinners against God, who need to repent and turn from our sins and turn back to God. We must  ***

*** accept and believe in God’s gift to us, Jesus, who was sent by God to die on a cross for our sins. ***

Therefore, to follow Jesus, is to follow His teachings as laid out in the Holy Bible.

The Bible is Gods Holy book and filled with Jesus-from beginning

to end!

Now that we have been given a little example of what it is to be a Christian, let us address the Baptist issue more directly.

Baptists are simply a “denomination” (“group”) under the umbrella of “Christianity” itself. The highest and most important tenant of the faith of Christianity (that most ALL Bible scholars agree on) is the tenant of “Salvation by faith, through the blood Jesus bled on the cross.”

Baptists teach and preach this tenant faithfully-and because of this they can and should be included under the umbrella of what is called “Christianity”.

Pastor Grant Thigpin delivers his sermon to a packed house Sunday morning at New Hope Ministries. For Thigpen the process of formulating Sunday's sermon doen't begin till Thursday. Many spiritual leaders tackle the job of creating a sermon in many different ways. Anthony Souffle/Staff

Now, to dig a little further and for the information of the reader, what usually separates Baptists as their own separate denomination, under the umbrella of Christianity, is because their denominiation does not propagate or follow the teachings of the Bible in the book of Acts-Chapter 2-where the Holy Spirit baptizes believers and enables them to speak in tongues.

The denomination under Christianity that believes and follows this tenant -and practice- is usually called “Pentacostal” . . .

Now understand, the majority of Bible scholars believe you do NOT have to be baptized in the Holy Spirit-nor speak in tongues-to

be saved and make it to heaven.

So, yes, Baptists ARE Christians

-so are Pentecostals, Holiness, Methodists and a few other “denominational” names we could throw in there.
